Professor Mahmoud Abdel-Aty is a professor of mathematics and information science at the University of Science and Technology, Zewail City.

Abdel-Aty’s academic background started in 1990 when he received his Bachelor of Science degree, excellent with honors, from Assuit University, Egypt. In 1995 he earned his Master of Science degree in applied mathematics from the same university. Abdel-Aty then moved to Germany where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree in applied mathematics from Max Plank Institute for Quantum Optics. In 2007, he received his Doctor of Science degree in mathematics and physics from the National University of Uzbekistan.

Abdel-Aty began his career as an assistant lecturer at Assuit University. In 1995 he went to Egypt's South Valley University where he held various positions. He progressed from lecturer to assistant professor in 1999, and in 2004 he was appointed as an associate professor. From 2007 to 2014, Abdel-Aty was the director of Natural Sciences Publishing, a peer-reviewed academic publisher, in the United States. Abdel-Aty also served as the head of the University of Bahrain’s scientific publishing center. In 2014, he became the vice president of the African Academy of Sciences.

Abdel-Aty’s research interests focus on applied mathematics, mathematical modeling, quantum circuits, quantum computation and information processing, transition state spectroscopy and laser control of physical systems, and the foundation of quantum mechanics.

In recognition of his scientific efforts, Abdel-Aty is the recipient of many awards including the National Award of Excellence in basic Sciences, Prof. Fayza Al-Khoraphy’s prize in physics, Amin Lotfy’s Prize for Basic Sciences, Abdul Hameed Shoman Prize, State Prize of Distinction in Mathematical Sciences awarded by the Egyptian Academy of Science and technology, and the Third World Academy Award in Mathematics.
