Goal 3 emphasizes the significance of Good health to sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda. It focuses on broader economic and social inequalities, urbanization, climate crisis, continuing burden of HIV and other infectious diseases, not forgetting emerging challenges such as non-communicable diseases. There is a need to give significant attention towards the realization of good health and well-being on a global scale.

 

Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

Breast cancer is the third highest cause of cancer mortality in Egypt. Zewail City together with several NGOs, health care organizations,and public figures hosted several campaigns to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer. The campaigns featured several events on the early detection of breast cancer and its effect on motherhood and kids. The campaign focused on the importance of healthy lifestyle, sports, and fitness in our daily life.

 

Smoking Cessation 

Tobacco is estimated to cause more than 7 million deaths annually. Zewail City of Science and Technology recognizes the scientific evidence indicating that tobacco products are harmful to one’s health and the health of others through second-hand smoking. Zewail City of Science and Technology is committed to the prevention of illness and injury through the provision and maintenance of tobacco-free healthy and safe conditions at its premises, designating outdoors smoking areas. Zewail City researchers in collaboration with several other health care institutes are currently undergoing research projects on the effect of nicotine on the spread of cancer cells and the patients’ response to cancer treatment.

The Biomedical Sciences Program is designed to provide students with basic and applied knowledge in the field of biology as it applies to health and disease. Students choose from a variety of concentrations including; Computational biology & Genomics, Molecular Cell Biology, Medical Sciences, and Drug Design and Development. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to pursue careers in pharmaceutics, diagnostics, or drug discovery. They would also be able to join research institutes and universities working on their postgraduate or professional degrees in the health sector.

Community engagement within health is crucial to achieve primary healthcare and promote healthcare-centered services. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, Zewail City realized the critical role of community engagement in developing solutions that can contribute to the prevention and control of COVID-19. In collaboration with partners from the private sector, Zewail City succeeded in the innovation and manufacturing of insulation cabins to be distributed to hospitals and clinical centers nationwide, in the context of confronting the repercussions of the Coronavirus and supporting the healthcare teams.

 

Establishment of the center of Scientific Excellence for Food Research and Analysis (CSEFRA) 

 

 

Following the 2030 vision for sustainable development, the center of Scientific Excellence for Food Research and Analysis (CSEFRA) is investing efforts into aligning the national agenda to achieve sustainable development to the economy and health. CSEFRA is funded by STDF (~17 M EGP) to be the first funded center by the STDF in the 6 of October City. The center will focus on the establishment of rapid and accurate testing services for the analysis of food, water, and agricultural products in accordance with ISO standards. The center has other unique objectives such as; establishment of a national microbial culture bank and the application of bacteriophage therapy and phage products to control foodborne pathogens (biocontrol)to reduce the biological hazards in the community and control both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

CSEFRA in collaboration with several other industrial institutes is testing both water and food products to ensure their safety and enhance public health for Egyptians.

CSEFRA is focusing on developing new phage products that can control infectious diseases without affecting human health.
