SDG 5: Gender Equality

Goal 5 calls for women and girls, everywhere, to have equal rights and opportunity, and be able to live free of violence and discrimination. It also aims to ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public life.

Women in academic programs
Zewail City is taking action to address the underrepresentation of women in Science-Technology-Engineering-Math (STEM) subjects, either as students or professionals within the STEM workforce. As an example, Zewail City has adopted a goal of increasing female undergraduate and graduate representation. We attempted enticing young women to join our University through focusing on female figures in our University’s brochures, visuals and marketing tools. Looking at academic year 2019-2020 we were proud to witness the proportion of female students to reach 33.6%.
Women as entrepreneurs
Zewail City’s Outreach and Engagement Unit has actively sought to increase female participation in our campaigns, encouraging recruitment of women volunteers as mentors and speakers, and initiating social innovation programs proven to appeal to women.
Zewail City women global recognition
Zewail City encourages women to actively participate in international entrepreneurship and development programs worldwide. One of Zewail City’s distinguished women researchers received the L’ORÉAL-UNESCO Award for Women in Science. Further, Zewail City women’s achievements are noticeable through the contribution and participation of our female faculty in numerous scientific societies and councils; including diverse National Scientific Councils and the Global Young Academy, thus taking a crucial role in policy making and road mapping
“Achieving gender equality requires the engagement of women and men, girls and boys. It is everyone’s responsibility..”

Students Non academic activities
Encouraging our young female students to engage in non academic activities is one of our core interests. Several young students participated in national and international competitions. Our young women travelled worldwide to the USA, Singapore, Netherlands and Armenia representing Zewail City and winning distinguished awards and recognitions, celebrating their outstanding achievements in areas of engineering, sustainability, entrepreneurship and social engagement.
