Zewail City Appoints Director of Photonics and Smart Materials
Zewail City is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Salah Obayya as Director of the Center for Photonics and Smart Materials hosted by the Institute for Energy, Environment and Space (IEES). His appointment begins 1 August, 2012.
"On behalf of the Supreme Advisory Board, I am pleased to welcome Dr. Salah Obayya to the City's team of leaders in the field of nanophotonics and materials science," said Dr Ahmed Zewail, Chairman of the Supreme Advisory Board. "Dr Obayya, a known figure in the field, combines the power of computations with the design of new materials. Both will serve Egypt in the frontiers of optical communications, solar energy conversion, and medical diagnosis," he added.
Obayya will joins Zewail City after being at the University of Glamorgan, UK, where he was full professor of photonics and Head of the Nanophotonics Research Center.
At the City, the Photonics and Smart Materials Center will chart strategic needs essential to the future developments related to designing and controlling light-based materials for applications in information technology and communication, harnessing of solar energy, and treatment of diseased biological cells.
Specifically the center will focus on novel themes centered on quantum-dot photovoltaic cells, plasmonics, metamaterials, photonic crystals, and many others. Moreover, the setup of this Center will form a strong platform for active research collaboration between the various centers across the City.

"Newly born Post-revolution Egypt is in the dire need of our sincere efforts. Research and development will play a fundamental role in shaping the future of our country. I am very excited to join the City," he added.
Dr Salah Obayya
Obayya is a prolific Scientist in the field of photonics, in particular in the area of numerical modeling of complex nanophotonic devices. His research activities play a fundamental role in pushing the boundaries of research in this field.
Obayya has a B.Eng. in electronic engineering (1991) from Mansoura University and a Ph.D. degree from City University, London, UK, in joint supervision with Mansoura University.
He worked as a senior lecturer and director of masters degree courses at the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering and Design, Brunel University, UK. From 2008, he held the positions of Full Professor Chair of photonics and Head of Nanophotonics Research center in the Faculty of Advanced Technology, University of Glamorgan.
Obayya won the Incentive State Award for Engineering Sciences from the Egyptian Government for the year 2005/2006. He is also a member of many reputable scientific organizations, such as the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Optical Society of America (OSA), and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE).
Obayya has publicated his work in the area of modeling of nanophotonic devices in top quality journals such as IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology, Journal of Quantum Electronics, Journal of Optoelectronics, Journal of Photonics, and IET Optoelectronics.
Obayya is the author of the book Computational Photonics published by Wiley (New York) in 2010.
