“On behalf of the board, I am very pleased that Dr Sherif Sedky has accepted to join our effort in this National Project for Scientific Renaissance,” commented Dr Ahmed Zewail, Chairman of the Board. “Dr Sedky is not only an accomplished scientist and engineer, but he has also displayed a leadership role in building a science center of international repute. I personally look forward to working with him and I know that with his integrity and devotion, the University will greatly benefit. We welcome him as the Founding Provost,” said Zewail.

In his new position as the Chief Academic Officer (CAO), Sedky will be involved in structuring the The University of Science and Technology broad curriculum and in developing the general framework for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education at the University. Additionally, with his group, he will incubate research at Zewail City in the general field of micro-electronics and devices with various applications in materials science and biomedical sciences.

The appointment of Provost involved a far-reaching search for scholars from inside and outside the country over the past few months since the inauguration of the City on November 1, 2011. The Board overwhelmingly supports Dr Sedky’s appointment. Sedky is in a unique position because of his previous and current involvement in building infrastructure of scientific research in Egypt and his familiarity with the institutions of research and education in both Egypt and abroad.

“I’m very delighted to join Zewail City, which will be a beacon of science and technology. During this transitional period, Egypt is in dire need for all our efforts and expertise to help shape the future,” Sedky commented. “Today, I am given the opportunity to play a pivotal role in this National Project. Having the trust of Professor Zewail and the Board to be in charge of the realization of the dream of all Egyptians is invaluable. I’m thrilled about this new enterprise and I feel that I have a huge responsibility toward every Egyptian who contributed to this marvelous project,” he said.

Dr Sherif Sedky has outstanding academic and administrative credentials, being involved in both educational and research institutions. He began his career as a graduate of Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering with distinction of the highest honor and then obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) in Belgium. He was appointed to Cairo University’s faculty and shortly thereafter he began his scientific career at the American University in Cairo (AUC), where he built a first-rate science center for micro-scale materials studies with a wide range of applications. He is Director of the Yousef Jameel Science & Technology Research Center, and together with his colleagues in engineering, chemistry, physics and biological sciences, the Center has become a real resource with international participation and impact. Sedky is also the associate dean for graduate studies and research and is a professor in the physics department at AUC.

Sedky has been visiting professor at Stanford University and other institutions abroad. His publication and patent records in the general field of micro-electronics and devices are of international quality.

"Dr Sherif Sedky is an extremely talented research scientist and a very effective administrator; we at the American University in Cairo are delighted that his skills will be available not only to our own students and faculty but to the wider research community in Egypt through his association with Zewail City of Science and Technology,” said Dr Lisa Anderson, President of AUC. “The collaboration between AUC and Zewail City represented by this new appointment promises to be an enormously fruitful investment in the future for Egypt," she added.
