Dr. Mohamed Helal, Associate Professor at the Biomedical Sciences Program, received a grant from the Science, Technology and Innovation Funding authority for the discovery of novel beta secretase inhibitors for treatment of Alzheimer's. This disease is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by significant synaptic loss and neuronal death in brain regions critical for cognitive functions. The objective of this research proposal is to design and synthesize drug-like molecules with β-secretase inhibitory activity using a combined fragment-based and structure-based approach.
