Zewail City Welcomes Sherif Sedky as its New Executive President

The Board of Directors (BoD) of Zewail City of Science and Technology appointed Prof. Sherif Sedky, Former Provost at the American University in Cairo (AUC), to serve as Zewail City’s new interim Executive President.

Sedky was the founding provost and acting president of Zewail City of Science and Technology since joining Egypt’s National Project for scientific Renaissance in April 2012 till September 2014. He then became the academic president of the City till April 2015.

He served in many reputable positions at the AUC, as Director of the Yousef Jameel Science and Technology Research Center in 2010, and as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research from 2011 till 2012.

Sedky’s academic background started in 1992 when he received his Bachelor of Science degree in electronics and communications engineering, with distinctive honors, from Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering. One year later he received a diploma from Cairo University, equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree, in engineering physics. He earned a Master of Science degree in 1995 from Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering and a second one in 1996 from Katholiek Universiteit in Leuven, Belgium, where he also received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1998 in microelectronics and devices.

In recognition of his scientific efforts, Sedky was awarded the Excellence in Research and Creative Endeavors Award granted by the American University in Cairo in 2007; the prestigious Egyptian National Excellence Prize in Advanced Technological Sciences, offered by the Academy of Scientific Research in 2003; the 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century Award, offered by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge in 2003; as well as the Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award granted by Cairo University’s Center of Advancement of Post-Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering Sciences in 1996.

In addition to holding 13 patents related to the field of electronic engineering, Sedky has over 100 publications and has contributed to highly ranked international conferences and journals.

On October 2016, the BoD has appointed Prof. Mostafa El-Sayed as the chairman of the City, following the steps of the late founder Ahmed Zewail.
